Next gen credit cards, with LCD panel and numeric keypad

Monday, October 29th, 2007

In yet another attempt to prevent electronic banking fraud, two companies, Innovative Card Technologies and eMue Technologies, have jointly developed this next-generation transaction card that promises to provide a whole new level of security.

At a glance the Credit Card Embedded Authentication Device looks like your standard banking debit card, except of course that it has a tiny display and a 10 digit keypad. The idea is that instead of entering a PIN or authorization number into a web browser or ATM that could be compromised, you use the card and its own secure system. As an example a user could enter their PIN number into the card and be provided with a one-time use numeric passcode. To authorize a transaction that passcode would then be entered into a device where it would be validated through an authentication server, allowing the transaction to be completed. While I have no idea when a card like this would actually be available to consumers, it is apparently being shown at various trade shows so it’s not just a concept.

First Look: T-Mobile’s Shadow

Monday, October 29th, 2007

Bellevue (WA) - T-Mobile has announced its latest phone, the Shadow, which it says is the first in a new series of communication-centric handsets.

Set to launch on Wednesday, the Shadow has an enhanced “MyFaves” tool that allows users to send any form of message - text, instant, e-mail, photo, video, or voice - with a single button press from the phone’s menu.

It also comes with Windows Mobile 6, Microsoft’s newest cell phone operating system, and a two megapixel digital camera. T-Mobile says the Shadow will also have one of the largest screens available in its repertoire.

At first glance, the elegant Shadow doesn’t even look like a Windows Mobile Smartphone. When you first power up the Shadow, you’ll be forgiven for being confused: After the Windows Mobile logo comes up, the home screen that greets you looks absolutely nothing like Windows Mobile, save for the familiar Start icon in the lower left corner. Its keypad with 20-key keyboard (a la Research in Motion’s design with the BlackBerry Pearl) is hidden beneath the slide-up screen.

Archos 605 WiFi 30 GB Review

Monday, October 29th, 2007

The 605 is like all the players in these pages rolled into one. It wirelessly surfs the Web. It plays a half-dozen audio and video formats. It displays photos and PDFs. With the help of an add-on, it even records television programming. And it ties everything together in a durable, beautifully designed package. The lush 4.3-inch touchscreen reduces button clutter to a single column on the right, while a smart-looking yet unobtrusive interface puts every menu, setting, and control exactly where you want it. If the iPod convinced you that watching video makes sense on an MP3 player, the 605 should persuade you that every last byte of your digital life belongs on one, too.
