Wii Rules! Analysts predict the Wii will be back on top in October, selling as many as 450,000 units.

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

Not every parent whose child wants a Nintendo Wii this holiday season will be able to get their hands on one. Instead of Tickle Me Elmo, this year parents will stalk the aisles of retailers and surf the Web in hot pursuit of the tiny, white “waggle box.” The $250 kid-friendly console has already been on the market for a year, and more than 13 million are already in the hands of gamers.

“Nintendo is making as many Wiis as it can,” says IGN GamerMetrics analyst Nick Williams. “There’s a limited supply, a continuously high demand.” Though Microsoft Xbox 360 sold more units than the Wii in September due to the launch of “Halo 3,” analysts predict the Wii will be back on top in October, selling as many as 450,000 units.

The Wii has made headlines for entertaining the elderly at retirement homes and putting motion-based controllers in the hands of many non-gamer moms. But the system has also delighted very young children because of its easy-to-grasp style of play and lack of button manipulations. Many parents, understandably cautious about putting 6-, 4- or even 2-year-olds in front of a videogame console, seem to have warily endorsed the Wii because of its anti-couch potato imperative and shallow learning curve.

Toshiba Working With Microsoft On New Entertainment Xbox

Monday, October 22nd, 2007

Microsoft, according to insiders at Toshiba owner of the HD DVD patents, claim that Microsoft is working on a brand new Xbox that will incorporate not only a new HD DVD drive but a large hard drive and new entertainment software that is a spin off from its struggling media centre offering.

The device is being developed in response to the PS3 driving sales of games software and Blu-ray content in several countries. A recent Sony Brand Wave study conducted in five countries including the UK, Australia, France Germany and Spain revealed that a key reason that consumers are buying a PS3 is because it includes a Blu-ray player.

Recent GFK research reveals that the recently launched Xbox 360 HD DVD attach player is not selling well. Another factor that impacted early sales of the Xbox 360 was that Microsoft failed to include a HDMI port - omitted because Microsoft wanted to cut down the costs of the console in an effort to compete up against the PS3.

The new Xbox device, while allowing for extensive gaming capability, will be positioned as an entertainment hub that includes gaming and extensive wireless networking capability as well as 1080p playback. There is also talk of it including a dual HD TV tuner and EPG capability and a docking port for an MP3 player. For Toshiba, the device is critical if it is to be successful in beating Sony and the Blu-ray promoters.

In September the Xbox 360 finally outsold the world-dominating Nintendo Wii in North America… and it’s all thanks to Halo 3.

According to figures released by the NPD Group, Bungie’s shooter drove sales of the Xbox 360 console to over 528,000 units, besting the cheaper Wii’s 501,000 units flogged for the month of September.
